MHS hockey looks forward

BY ALEX SCHEUER

The Mamaroneck Tigers varsity hockey team is looking forward to competing heavily in the playoffs this season. The hockey squad at MHS has always had a sense of pride that many schools cannot match. The Tigers, with a 7-7 record, are hoping to reach certain goals, such as beating Suffern and making a long playoff run.

Coach Michael Chiapparelli trains the Tigers rigorously and makes sure that they are prepared for tough games against schools like White Plains, Suffern and Clarkstown. “I condition the athletes six weeks prior to the season’s start,” he said. “We are always clearly the best team in shape right out of the gate in section/state. We set high and realistic goals for the team and try our best to go out and reach them.”

With their intense practice and workout schedule, it is no surprise that the hockey team players are in such good shape. “We are on the Hommocks Ice Rink on Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00am, Tuesdays 8:20-9:50pm, Wednesdays 3:15-4:15pm, and Saturday night 8:15-10:15pm. We are also constantly in the weight room working on our strength and endurance,” Chiapparelli said.

The Tigers’ team building and strengthening is certainly paying off. The Tigers recently beat Clarkstown (6-5) and Kenmore West (4-3.) Eric Alimanestianu ‘14 commented on the Tigers’ recent burst of stride, not to mention, wins. “The chemistry at the beginning of the season was iffy, but after a couple of tournaments upstate, the chemistry improved greatly,” he said. “The team is looking better than ever. Sectionals are coming up, and we are getting more prepared every week.” Alimanestianu is new to the varsity team this year, but is a player with a lot of potential.

The Tigers have upcoming games against Rye, White Plains and Pelham Memorial, and have no doubt that their tiger spirit will shine at its finest. And, as Chiapparelli said, the team “looks forward to competing in the championships, sectionals and beyond.”
