Fall sports return at MHS

Boys’ Varsity Soccer

The Mamaroneck boys’ Varsity Soccer team, a force to be feared by opposing teams, had its first game two weeks ago on Sept. 8. Their game against Edgemont and MHS was victorious by a score of two to one. A premier player and one of the only two sophomores on the team, Maximo Vasquez (right back) had this to say about the team’s future: “My predictions are that we are going far in sectionals.” The soccer team was looking forward to getting the best of their rival team, Scarsdale, an did. After remaining undefeated through the first weeks of the season, Coach Richard Becker and the players hope for a good crowd of Mamaroneck fans in the upcoming games.

Girls’ Varsity Tennis

The Girls’ Varsity Tennis Squad, a wrecking ball of a team, began its season with a win on Sept. 16 against Bronxville High School. Captains Stephanie Banks ‘12 and Gaby Markey ‘12, along with their coach, Tim Hooker, led the strong team of girls. One player, Sarah Yukelis ‘14, said this of the team’s potential: “I predict that we will all play really well and win a lot of matches.” She adds that they hope to win by a healthy margin against their rival schools, Scarsdale, Ursuline and New Rochelle.

Varsity Football

As always, the Varsity Football Team is prepared for a big season. With the new Memorial Turf Field finished and ready for play, tiger pride is back this fall and as strong as ever. “There has been tremendous growth in the team since we started in August,” said Defensive Tackle and Offensive Guard, Kevin Droesch ’13. “Coach Vitti has told us since the start that in order to play football and win, everyone must be all in. This means that everyone works to the best of their abilities every day.” The team’s first win was a 21-0 trouncing of Fox Lane.

Varsity Swimming

The Girls’ Varsity Swim Team is looking forward to a great season. They won their first meet of the year against White Plains on Sept. 14. Kelly Wicker ‘14 was optimistic about the future of their season. “So far since preseason, I’ve seen the girls work hard, and at our first swim meet, all of the work seemed to finally pay off,” she said. “Some goals of the Swim Team are to definitely send as many girls to sectionals as possible, and hopefully to send a few further on; possibly to states.”

Girls’ Varsity Soccer

The Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team has kicked off the season in a big way. With four games already played, the teasm is 3-1 and looking to dominate in their coming games. “First off, the team is looking great this year; everyone brings something different to the table,” said midfielder Audrey Owens ’12. “As for goals, I really think that our focus is on winning our league. With that said, there is definitely going to be some serious competition. The crowds at our games have been crazy so far!”

Varsity Volleyball

Mamaroneck Volleyball this year looks extremely promising with five returning seniors, six juniors and one talented freshman. The Tigers have already started off a strong campaign in the 2011-2012 season with a 4-5-2 record. In the first 11 games of the season, Mamaroneck, led by senior captains Elvina Kocan and Brittany Jackson, secured four strong wins over Rye High School, Roosevelt High School, Lincoln High School and Sacred Heart. Mamaroneck has a strong foundation and future ahead of them as they head deeper into the 2011-2012 season.

Varsity Field Hockey

Mamaroneck field hockey hopes to have another successful year after finishing second in all of New York State last year. The team is led by a group of strong seniors who look to take home the title this year. Returning seniors include Jessica Gardiner, Molly Cohen, Jessica Corbin, Alicia Meglio, Nina Kumar, Scarlett Fugazy and Daniella Torres. Although Mamaroneck is dealing with losses of all-state players Emily Allen and Madeleine Despins, they still have a lot of potential. Mamaroneck has talent that many other schools can’t compete with and the players look to showcase their talent this season. Mamaroneck has not missed a section title since 2003 and it doesn’t look like that streak will end this year.

Varsity Cross Country

Mamaroneck Varsity Cross Country has established a program based on good sportsmanship, competitive matches and dominant runners. This season should be no different. Although Mamaroneck has lost many valuable runners, Sarah Blunt, one of this year’s captains, is confident that Mamaroneck will continue to succeed this year. “Although we don’t have as many veteran runners this year, we do have a strong and dedicated bunch. It will be hard to rebound without the strong senior runners from last year, but we will definitely be able to compete,” Blunt said. Veteran runner Thaddeus Sheehan is also looking forward to the new year of Mamaroneck Cross Country. After spending the summer training in Kenya, he looks to help the Tigers’.
