Drifting Back to the Coast

BY MAILA SAGHIR

The annual Coast dance will be held on Friday, Jan. 8, the first weekend after returning from winter break. This year, the Coast Board’s new policy permits only 350 students to enter the Harbor Pavilion in Mamaroneck.

Coast Board member, junior Conor Joyce elaborated on the Board’s decision. “After talking to people in the community as well as the fire department, we came to the decision that having over 350 people in the dance at one time would be too hazardous,” he said. “The last thing we want to do is put people’s lives at risk.”

Tickets will be sold at school on a first-come first-serve basis for admittance to the dance. There are mixed feelings toward the Coast this year.

Although freshman Melissa Merker has never attended the dance, she said, “I’m a bit nervous, but at the same time, I’m looking forward to it because all my friends have told me about how awesome it is.”

Sophomore Gerry McMullin shared similar sentiments. “I didn’t go to the Coast last year, but I heard it was a huge hit,” he said. “I am borderline excited. I hope it’s not a buzz kill.”

The uniqueness of the Coast lies in the fact that MHS brings students together from every grade for one night.

Junior Jared Loewenthal, said, “Coast is really fun because you get to hang out with people you don’t normally hang out with.”

Senior Gabby Barella agreed. “Coast was really fun and has always been something I’ve looked forward to,” she said.  “It’s a great way for the high school to interact, and I can’t wait for Janurary 8th, 2010.”

Tickets will be sold by Student Council from Jan. 5 through Jan. 6 in the overpass.
