On Oct. 6, Mamaroneck High School hosted its annual club fair on the track. There were 85 club booths at this year’s fair, 22 of which were added this year.
Flocks of students made their ways around the track to peruse the options, as the Pep Band played live music. The wide array of clubs truly offers something for everyone; some clubs attempt to tackle the world’s problems, while others have the potential to add a lighthearted element to the MHS experience. Students often receive incentives to sign up for certain clubs, such as homemade brownies.
The Environmental Club handed out free green cupcakes to anyone who signed up, while Nap Club distributed cookies and milk to all who would consider attending Monday naps at lunch, “hosted by Harry Potter.”
One of the new clubs that was displayed this year was the Light Saber Club, founded by Sarah Haas ‘14 and Simone Van Taylor ’14. “We are so excited to finally be starting this club,” Haas said. “Simone and I have been wanting to start this club since we came to the high school.”
Haas and Van Taylor were very eager when students signed up to join their club. They displayed light sabers to generate excitement in hopes of receiving a few email addresses and names of interested students. The club meets on Sundays at Flint Park, and everyone love the idea because it’s very unique”, Van Taylor said.
Other clubs have been around for many years, for example, Model Congress. Model Congress is a club in which bills are proposed and discussed in structured debate. Jane Weisenberg ’12 is the current president of Model Congress. She first joined her freshman year after the club fair. Weisenberg said, “I originally joined Model Congress because I love debating and politics,” she continued, “We also go to conferences outside of school where we compete. Those are always really fun.”
Model Congress is every Thursday at lunch in the LGI, where anyone who wants to attend is able to participate and get involved.
A variety of performing arts groups have stands at Club Fair as well, with hopes of recruiting new members to audition with the start of the new school year. The Sound, Funkapella, Krazii Krew, Step Team and Tap Team all had a presence at this year’s fair.
Jessie Kogan ‘14 and Remi Reinlib ’14 said they join clubs to participate in extracurricular activities, but also to spend time with their friends. “The clubs at MHS give us a lot of opportunities to participate in activities that we love to do,” said Kogan. Reinlib agrees. “If a lot of your friends join too, it can be a lot of fun,” she said.
All the clubs are MHS are certainly different and have focuses that fit everyone’s likings. And of course, it is never too late to join a club. Students can always seek the help of Carol Scheffler, Coordinator of Student Activities (and organizer of Club Fair) to find a way to get involved.
