On Oct. 18 the Board of Education held a meeting to track progress that’s been made so far this year, and set goals for the future. Their meetings occur every third Tuesday of the month and take place in the tiered classroom.
The meeting began with a new custom that had been set into motion for the very first time with the arrival of Meryl Rubinstein, the new district treasurer.
Previously, the board members would receive a list of all the finances the school had dealt with so far, but the numbers were never explained. Rubinstein’s job at the meeting was to explain where all the money was going, why certain figures had dropped or increased and clarify as a whole how the school is doing financially.
Next on the agenda, members of Student Council Michael Salko ‘13 and Jessica Gardiner ‘12 gave a recap of some highlights of the school year at MHS so far this school year.
They focused on events such as the club fair, pep rally, homecoming and Musical Collage, which, as they reported, were all great successes. They also spoke about the status of Mamaroneck High School’s fall sports teams, almost all of which were having fantastic seasons.
Another new aspect of the board meetings was a series of short video clips discussing new additions to the school district as well as the current condition of programs already in place.
One of the videos updated the board on the two newest members of the pace community, Allison Parsley and Zachary Moore. The video included interviews with each of the new staff members speaking about their reactions to joining the Mamaroneck High school Pace community, all of which were very positive.
When reflecting on Pace’s most recent performance, Musical Collage, Moore said, “The kids are so incredibly talented. I couldn’t believe they wrote all the skits themselves.”
One video clip depicted the Mandarin program in the school district which has been in place for 22 years and is rapidly gaining popularity.
It was noted that the program started with only one teacher and grew to two at MHS and one at the Hommocks. The students in the video clip were all very enthusiastic about learning Mandarin and called the program “a family.”
The meeting wrapped up with the granting of approval for the A.P. Government class to take a trip to New Hampshire in January for the New Hampshire primary.
After the meeting was adjourned, the board president, Robin Nichinsky, said of the future, “ The year is off to a wonderful start and the board is looking forward to another great year.”
