Recently, the halls of MHS have been spotted with blue. Ever since Matt Wolf ’11 began a club, Stand Up To Cancer, dedicated to cancer research, people have eagerly bought the blue “Stand Up To Cancer” bracelets.

Wolf adopted the idea of the bracelets after acknowledging their successes with other organizations such as Livestrong. He realized that this form of merchandise would be a great tool for raising funds and awareness. The bracelets certainly kicked off the club’s success, and they have made many students conscious of Wolf’s efforts.

Stand Up To Cancer is one of the most recognized cancer organizations. The money that the club raises will be used to help “dream teams” of doctors, nurses and researchers. The so-called “dream teams” aid struggling cancer patients while also working toward coming up with a cure. In this manner, the organization benefits both present and future generations.

Cancer is one of the many diseases that we cannot seem to cure. That is why so much dedicated work has gone into research, with the hopes of eventual progress. Although Wolf may not be healing patients himself, his club at MHS is helping to pave the way for a healthy and cancer-free future.

Wolf has come a long way since he first started the club. Although he said that he initially struggled in attracting students to the cause, he has been able to follow his passion and project it upon others.

As the year has progressed, new members have continued to join the mass effort. Wolf is very pleased with the enthusiasm that others have for the cause.

Wolf has already raised about $650 from the bake sales and bracelets and his efforts are far from finished. Wolf is determined to make a substantial dent in the funding of cancer research, which has, in part, been influenced by his personal experiences.

“My motivation for starting the club was my mother's passing this past summer from cancer,” Wolf said. “After it happened, I decided to find the best-fit organization for raising awareness at MHS, especially because she was an alumni of MHS.”

Wolf is committed to his cause, and he encourages others to help him raise awareness. He is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in.
