Q and A with anchor Kyle Rudge ‘12
BY ELLA DEAN

How does it feel when you are anchoring?

It is hard to get used to initially, with lights glaring in your face, constantly having to sit up straight, making sure you aren’t moving around, actually pronouncing words and reading the teleprompter correctly, and, on top of that, trying to be funny. But most of the time it is a lot of fun; Zain and I tend to call each other most nights before a show and plan our costumes/bits for the next day.

Are you ever nervous?

I was definitely nervous at the beginning, but became more comfortable over time.

What techniques have you picked up? Do you learn new techniques to incorporate from your previous experiences from each time you record?

We have learned to sit up straight, practice ahead of time, focus on the script more than jokes, make sure to pause and make the jokes short and sweet. I feel like you get better each time because you know what you did wrong before.

Do you use any special tricks?

I personally find it easier to read on camera when in costume or wearing something weird--people will be focusing on that rather than what I am saying.

Do you use any tricks to annunciate and make you feel more comfortable?

Reading the script over and over and over helps, but when that fails, it helps to actually understand what you’re talking about.

Do you picture the audience in their underwear?

If I had an audience I would.

How do you feel about the class?

I really like the class, both on and off camera. We are really starting to learn how to work together. Some days it goes great and sometimes not so much, but I like figuring out what to do, especially since Info is so different from regular Video class.

What is your favorite aspect of working on MHS Info?

My favorite part of doing Info is cracking lame jokes that I personally just find funny… It is so much fun to put the show together and to be in the studio when “great” ideas come about.

What are the best-kept secrets you have about Info?

If I had to think of a secret, it would probably be the amount of yelling back and forth that goes on in the studio, which gets incredibly chaotic when the camera isn’t rolling.

What is the craziest or funniest thing that has happened to you during your class?

The funniest thing was when Zain and I were anchoring, and I slipped 5-hour energy into his drink, which didn’t quite come across when we filmed it. We rehearsed that several times, and every time Zain took a sip he almost gagged. He was not happy after that, but it was worth it.

Are you a natural?

Pfft, I am definitely a natural, Zain.... not so much (just kidding).

What 3 words would you use to describe MHS info?

Above everything else.
