It’s not often that students can brag that a celebrity went to their school. Of course many graduates have gone into successful fields, and some have even made the news. But very few alumni have reached the novel fame experienced by recording artists. That is why it is not surprising that the Timeflies sensation has roused so much excitement in the MHS student body.

Cal Shapiro, a former Mamaroneck High School student, started Timeflies with his partner Rob Resnick at Tufts University. They decided to make a living out of their musical hobby, and it worked. Their band has greatly developed since its founding, and today performs songs from its new album all over the Eastern seaboard. Recently, their album “The Scotch Tape” reached the top ten on iTunes at its highly anticipated release on September 19th.

Timeflies has become a dream come true for Shapiro and Resnick, and they are only at the beginning of their promising musical careers. Shapiro was eager to participate in an interview for The Globe and he considers his years at MHS among the best of his life. In Adele’s hit single “Someone Like You,” she sings, “You know how the time flies. Only yesterday, it was the time of our lives.” Although Shapiro’s musical career has successfully taken off, he regards his time at MHS as the highpoint of his youth. It must considered how quickly time flies, and that before one knows it, one will be pursuing what today one may dream of.

Did you always want to be a performer?

I don’t really know, but I loved acting during my high school years, especially in the Senior Play at MHS. So yes, I guess I have always enjoyed being on the stage.

How did you and your partner start working on music together?

Rob was a drummer in The Ride, which was a funk band in need of a singer. After I joined the band we started getting a lot of gigs like opening for Ludacris. Rob and I realized how successful we could be, so when the rest of the band went their separate ways, we started recording Timeflies on our own.

How did you come up with the name and idea for your band?

When we started off, we were pretty lazy. Our first track was called “Fade,” and it was very successful, but after that we let the semester end without producing anything else. Someone told us that “time flies” because neither of us really had any concept of passing time. Eventually our friends started calling us “Timeflies,” and the name just stuck!

Can you explain a little bit about Timeflies Tuesdays?

After Rob and I started free-styling, we began to find that a lot of people loved our songs. So we created Timeflies Tuesdays, where we would work together all day on Tuesdays (and only Tuesdays) to release a new quirky musical number. Timeflies Tuesdays has gotten a great response, and we like giving our fans a little sneak peak of our recording.

What is your favorite aspect about making music and performing?

It’s definitely the freedom. It feels like we’re our own creative department, and we can do and produce whatever we want. Making music gives me a really cool, liberating feeling, and it’s what I love to do. Also, hearing fans recite your words is the best feeling in the world.

What message would you like to send to Mamaroneck High School students (your biggest fans)?

Don’t let class get in the way of your education. Do what you love and good things will happen.

Would you ever consider having a concert back at MHS?

100%, in fact I’m in touch with people right now about having a Timeflies concert at Mamaroneck High School.

What can your fans look forward to in the future of Timeflies?

A different sound. We try to fuse a lot of different genres together so our fans should really just expect the unexpected!

Are there any tracks that you’re particularly proud of?

In my senior year at Tufts, Rob and I put together “All Night,” which was one of my favorites. I also love our recent Timeflies Tuesdays production: iTribute. It’s a rap commemorating Steve Jobs and the entire Apple industry.

Is there anything else you would like to say to MHS?

Yeah, a shout out to all my teachers and fans! Hope to see you at a Timeflies concert soon!
