What comes to people’s minds when they hear the word “Funkapella?” Usually, the words “best a capella group, period” are tossed around, but it’s more than just that.
Funkapella is run by Adam Katz ‘10, Will Jacobs ’10 and Natalie Diacovo ’10, more commonly referred to as Funkmasters K, J and D.
Other members include Sam Karson, Eliot Cohen, Maria Gray, Charlotte Cwikowski, Sarah Meister, Michaela Friedberg, Vineeth Panicker, Jason Haber, Brendan Schmitt, Grace Trueman, Alec Reinlib, Jordie Lesser-Roy, Mackenzie Lesser-Roy, Jordan Katz and Megan Marr.
Just from that, you can tell that Funkapella is clearly more than just the “newbie” a capella group. Sure, we aren’t established and we don’t have a legacy, but we make up for what we lack with our joyous spirit, funky attitudes and our skillful singing and beat boxing.
I asked Cohen ’10, or as most of you know him, Big Sexy, what the best part of Funkapella is for him. He, without hesitation, responded “all of the ladies I get because of my amazingly silky voice.”
Funkapella has the ability to bring out the best in people. No other group is funky enough to protest Mrs. Porter at the MLK assembly and still have class. Funkapella united the student body at the aforementioned assembly with its melodious and inspiring rendition of “Isn’t She Lovely” (featuring Rochelle Daughma ’10). Students of all ages cheered and gave a standing ovation as we left the stage.
Now, this is not meant to disrespect the Sound at all, but a little healthy group rivalry never hurt anybody. Jacobs accurately described Funkapella when he said it’s “kind of like the Sound, except fun to
